There is a photo at sunset, where my dear friend Al is sitting in the foreground of a picturesque landscape next to a small body of water. He balances on the edge of a bench in his motorcycle gear with a demeanor that is pensive and calm, resting his arms lightly on his knees with his hands laced gently together. He is slightly crouched over, as if he is still on his bike. The sun is setting almost directly behind him, beyond a distant mountain range, illuminating a landscape of plains and shrubs in golden hues, and reflecting off the water as well as the veneer of the bench he sits on, slightly silhouetting the clouds as well as his figure. He’s wearing his signature smirk, although not as mischievously as it often is, and gazing humbly towards the camera. He appears content, more so than I am familiar with, having pushed himself to travel so far, and by himself, in an effort to discover.
